The major types of arthritis that affect the knee are:

- Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative, "wear-and-tear" type of arthritis. As osteoarthritis progresses, the cartilage in the knee joint deteriorates. Eventually, the cartilage becomes frayed and rough, and the space between the bones decreases.
- Rheumatoid arthritis attacks multiple joints throughout the body, including the knee joint. As a symmetrical condition, it affects the same joint on both sides of the body. Rheumatoid arthritis causes swelling of the synovial membrane that covers the knee joint. In turn, this causes knee pain and stiffness.
- Posttraumatic arthritis develops after a knee injury. Broken bones, for instance, may damage the joint surface over time and cause arthritis. An injured meniscus or ligament can cause instability and additional wear on the knee joint, resulting in arthritis over time.

A knee injury can negatively affect your quality of life. Fortunately, treatments can lessen the severity of your symptoms. Talk to one of our knee arthritis specialists at Gramercy Pain Center about your treatment options. Don't hesitate to contact us.
