Back pain diagnosis depends on how you describe your pain, its area of distribution, and any other related symptoms. Back pain can be classified into six categories:
- Acute pain. The pain is usually short-lived, occurring suddenly after an accident or injury. It lasts from a few days to four weeks before it goes away on its own.
- Subacute pain. This form of back pain is usually caused by a traumatic event or injury such as a sprained back. A subacute back condition lasts between four and twelve weeks on average.
- Chronic pain. The condition is characterized by persistent back pain lasting more than 12 weeks. Having long-term back pain can adversely affect your health, mobility, and quality of life.
- Axial pain. This type of pain is also called mechanical pain because it is localized to one area or spot. The pain may be sharp, dull, coming and going, persistent, or throbbing.
- Referred pain. The intensity and location of referred pain can vary, and it is often described as dull and achy.
- Radicular pain. Radicular pain is often described as an electric shock-like sensation or as stinging pain, which follows the path of the spinal nerve as it exits the spinal canal.
