The epidural steroid injection (ESI) is used for chronic back pain. During epidural injections, your provider injects a steroid or corticosteroid medication into the epidural space around your spine. Rather than blocking pain or feeling, the steroid coats the irritated nerves that are causing you pain and reduces swelling. Steroids allow nerves to heal. An epidural steroid injection can provide temporary, long-term, or permanent pain relief.
Depending on the cause, it can provide relief for neck, arm, back, and leg pain caused by inflamed spinal nerves. An epidural steroid injection may provide pain relief for several days or even years.
