An episodic tension headache is a sudden onset of pain that generally lasts around 30 minutes to a week. It usually occurs less than 15 days in a month, for at least 3 months.

On the other hand, chronic tension headaches are more frequent and can last longer than one week. In addition, they may recur daily or several times a day over long periods.
